Battlehawks Week 7 reKAWp

SHOW NOTES

AJ McCarron

  • 26/34, 222 yds, 3 TD, 3 sacks for 12 yards

    • Q4, 9/9, 77 yds, 1 TD

      • Season 37% yards, 33% completions

  • Issues

    • Very Nitpicky

      • All but one incompletion in 1st half

        • And that one incompletion was an earned miss

          • Pressure in his face

      • Missing high in/around the red zone

        • 1st TD drive

          • Missed an open Darius Shepherd from the 26-yard line

        • Marcell Ateman’s catch that got called back on the goal line

          • Could be better placement

      • Hurt going down

        • Strengthen your ligaments

      • He’s doing so well, that I expect him to keep playing well

        • We’re getting soft

      • He doesn’t have more pass yards than Ben DiNucci

  • Good Stuff

    • Literally everything else

      • Sidearm-esque TD pass to Gary Jennings

      • Only one incompletion in the second half

      • 8/11 for 85 yards on the first drive

      • Hit 9 different guys

      • Took what defense gave him

      • Called the play to ice the game

Wide Receivers

  • Darius Shepherd

    • 7/8 for 70 yards, 1 TD, Long 14

      • 10 yards on a screen

      • 12 yards on a 3rd and short

      • TD on fade

        • When he can Bee Line to corner of EZ

          • Chef’s kiss

  • Hakeem Butler

    • 4/6 for 27 yards, 1 TD, Long 16

      • Amazing TD grab

        • Slows his body down mid air

          • Makes the DB go too far

            • Snatches it

      • Wide open for a sneaky acrobatic 2ptc catch

      • Sets up the Donny Hageman 59 yard field goal

      • He got DPI’d

        • And Dean Blandino sucks

  • JAKE SUTHERLAND

    • FINALLY

    • 4/4 for 26 yards, long 15 yards

      • 15 yards came on 3rd and 17 before the “failed challenge”

      • So consistent

      • They hit him twice in a row

      • He doesn’t have to be a gimmick

  • Gary Jennings

    • 2/2 for 26, 1 TD, long 14

      • Great route on TD fade

        • Great ball too

        • Never slowed down and won in a race

  • Marcell Ateman

    • 2/5 for 18

      • Great 3rd down target

        • 1st scoring drive, 9 yards on 3rd and short

      • They targeted him early

        • Drew attention throughout the game

      • Good for him to be back

  • Austin Proehl

    • 2/4 for 17

      • Notable play was when he got hit and didn’t go down

        • Not a big tackle breaker

        • Kind of a big hit too

      • They hit him in space as well

  • Steven Mitchell had a couple catches for 10 yards

  • Jovani Haskins (TE) caught a pass and didn’t fall down on his route

Running backs

  • Brian Hill

    • Rushing

      • 11 carries for 53 yards long 15 yards

        • Meh kind of production

        • 2 fumbles

          • Not good

          • 4 fumbles/near fumbles in 2 games for

    • Receiving

      • 3/3 for 28 yards, long 16

      • 3rd and 14 after Scoop and score, 16 yard catch and run

        • You see what makes him good

          • Out runs linebackers

  • Mateo Durant

    • 4 carries for 8 yards

    • Huge difference between Durant and Hill

      • Becomes more apparent every week.

Offensive Line

  • You know how I flame the offensive line every week?

    • Not this week

  • Another good game from this team.

    • Against a good defensive front

    • They lead the league in sacks and only got 2 real sacks

      • One of the sacks was great, defensively.

        • Rather than terrible offensively

  • Gave AJ time to throw

    • Gave routes time to develop

  • Run blocking could be better, but I’m not gonna touch on that

    • Pass protection was good

  • Only one of the tackles got thrown one time

  • Steven Gonzalez went out with an ankle, but came back in

Offense as a Whole

  • Another good offensive game

    • Kind of a lul in the 3rd quarter

      • I would like to see more plays that schemed the big guys (Butler, Ateman, Sutherland) getting the ball

        • Especially when the match up favors their size over the DBs

        • Seemed like they were trying to get the smaller guys (Mitchell, Shepherd, Proehl, Jennings) the ball and it wasn’t working.

          • Just switch it up a tille bit

  • Took what the defense gave them

    • Defense didn’t really allow any deep bombs

    • AJ had protection to go through his progressions

      • Hit short/intermediate stuff

    • When they got moving, they stayed moving

      • 3 scoring drives

        • 13 plays, 97 yards, 8 ish minutes

          • After a turnover

        • 8 plays, 45 yards, 5 minutes

        • 11 plays, 73 yards, 7 ish minutes

  • Again, great to have the tight end get in there

Other things before defense

  • Dean Blandino

    • The drive after the failed Challenge he slows down the Marcell Ateman catch on the goal line and reverses the call

      • I like their idea, but Dean is so inconsistent and he sucks

  • Ted from Nothern Wisconsin and Jerry from Hazelwood, who grew up in Granite City

    • Play the clip

    • Jerry first said he was a fan when the cardinals and rams left

      • Timeline doesn’t add up, but who am I to flame someone for their allegiances

  • Shout out to the guys who brought baby prosthetic legs to the game in support of their friend who was hanging his amputated leg over the wall

Defensive Line

  • Didn’t have the greatest 1st half

    • Got ran on for a few big plays

      • 136 rushing yards

        • Over half were from the big plays

          • We know those can hurt, need to limit those

    • Luckily Cole McDonald was sensing pressure that wasn’t there

      • Did things you don’t want a run first QB to do

        • Drop his eyes

        • Drop and roll out VERY deep

          • 10 or 15 yards sometimes

            • Last play was 15 yards back

  • Everything kind of changed in the 3rd quarter when they got their first sack

    • None of the D linemen got on the ground

    • Just all ran straight forward for a group bull rush

    • At some point AJ Smith told Cole to stay in the pocket

      • He paid for it

    • Freedom Akinmoladun sack

  • D line came alive and started actually physically imposing their will

  • They all had a quite day statistically

    • LaCale London

      • Bull rush sack on extra point

        • Put left guard on skates

        • Stopped it from being a tie game

Line Backers and DBs

  • Had the better game today

    • Cole McDonald

      • 15/32, 106 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, sacked twice for 14 yards

  • Cole McDonald interception

    • Forced to roll out to his right

      • Throws from outside the right hash, across the field to outside the left hash

        • Brendan Sebastion has about 2 hours to get to the ball and picks it off

  • Brendan Sebastian

    • Sideline interview

      • Tattoo sleeve

        • Family slogan is dominate the day

          • That’s aggressive

  • Mike Hampton

    • DPI on HOU only scoring drive

      • Would’ve been able to stop them if he didn’t do that

        • Moved the ball to the 1 yd line

          • Just a matter of time until they score

  • Nate Meadors

    • 11 tackles

      • One of them he came inside tackle at the the line

      • 8 solo

      • 59 offensive plays

        • About 20% of the tackles

  • Travis Feeney

    • 2 TFL

    • 1 sack

    • On the season

      • 18 tackles, 13 solo,

        • 3.5 sacks, 5 TFLs

          • About 50% of his tackles are going backwards

Defense as a Whole

  • Some teams they plan on a heavy run game and they get beat throwing the ball

    • This game they planned on being thrown on, but they got beat running

  • They did great against the passing game

    • One guy got 50 rec. Yards, and that was on 7 receptions

    • Better than they do when they are planning on stopping the run

    • Hopefully they can take this performance and use it going down the stretch

  • DBs and LBs did great against screens

    • Seemed like they were always getting first contact behind or right at the L.o.S.

  • Did a good job stopping big QB runs

    • Longest was 10 yards and it only happened one time

      • Quick to respond

      • Q4, the D line forced McDonald to run on 3rd and long

        • DBs were in prevent

          • Came down and got him for only a 4 yard gain

  • They took a team that averages 27 points a game

    • To 6 offensive points

Special teams

  • Shepherd hasn’t gotten any huge returns in a couple games

    • Maybe that changes at home

  • Donnie Hageman

    • Good from 59 yards before the half

    • Now 8/12

      • Worst percentage in the league

      • Longest field goal in the league

        • So suck our dicks
